The Florida Keys are famous for their diverse marine life, and on our reef trips, you've got a shot at some real beauties. Let's break down what you might find on the end of your line:
Crevalle Jack: These bruisers are the bulldogs of the reef. They might not be the prettiest fish in the sea, but boy, do they put up a fight! Jacks are known for their powerful runs and never-say-die attitude. They're available year-round but really heat up in the warmer months. When a jack takes your bait, hold on tight – it's going to be a wild ride!
Mutton Snapper: If you're after a fish that's both a challenge to catch and delicious on the plate, mutton snapper is your target. These clever fish require some finesse to hook, but once you do, you're in for a treat. They love to hang around structure and can grow to impressive sizes. Spring and early summer are peak seasons for muttons, but we catch them year-round in the Keys.
Lane Snapper: Don't let their smaller size fool you – lane snappers are a blast to catch and make for some excellent eating. These feisty little guys often travel in schools, so when you find them, it's not uncommon to catch several in quick succession. They're a great target for beginners and kids, offering steady action and a chance to hone your skills.
Black Grouper: The heavyweight champion of our reef fishing trips, black grouper are the fish that dreams (and fish stories) are made of. These powerful bottom-dwellers put up an epic battle, especially when you're trying to pull them away from their rocky homes. They're available year-round, but regulations can be strict, so sometimes it's catch-and-release. Either way, hooking into a big grouper is an experience you won't forget.
There's something special about fishing the reefs off Marathon. Maybe it's the crystal-clear water that lets you see the fish before they even bite. Or perhaps it's the thrill of never knowing what might take your bait next – will it be a colorful snapper or a hard-fighting jack? Our trips are designed to give you a taste of what makes Florida Keys fishing world-famous. We keep things relaxed and fun, but don't be surprised if you catch the fishing bug hard. Many of our first-timers end up becoming regulars, coming back year after year to try their luck on these rich fishing grounds.

Black Grouper are one of our prized reef catches here in Marathon. These powerful fish average 2-3 feet but can grow over 5 feet and 100 pounds. Look for them around reefs, wrecks, and ledges in 30-300 foot depths. They're ambush predators, so fishing near structure is key. Use heavy gear - at least 80lb braid and a strong leader. Live bait works great, but they'll hit cut bait too. Here's a pro tip: when you feel a tap, start reeling immediately. These guys inhale prey whole and will quickly dive back to their rocky lairs. The fight is intense - be ready for a battle of strength and endurance. Black Grouper are around year-round but more active in warmer months. The meat is top-notch - firm, white, and mild. Perfect for grilling or blackening. Just watch out for sharks trying to steal your catch on the way up!

These hard-fighting fish are a blast to catch around Marathon. Crevalle Jacks usually run 12-24 inches but can get up to 4 feet and 60 pounds. Look for them in shallow flats, seagrass beds, and near reefs. They're aggressive predators that chase bait to the surface - watch for feeding birds to spot schools. Jacks put up an intense fight on light tackle. Use fast-moving lures like silver spoons or topwater plugs. A local trick is to cast beyond the school and retrieve quickly through it. The meat isn't great for eating, but the acrobatic runs and sheer power make Jacks a fun catch, especially for beginners getting used to battling bigger fish. They're around year-round but most active in warmer months. Be ready for screaming drags when you hook into one of these bulldogs!

Lane Snapper are a fun, tasty catch that's perfect for beginners. These smaller snappers usually run 10-14 inches, with a pretty pink-red color and yellow stripes. You'll find them around reefs and vegetated sandy areas in 70-230 foot depths. Lanes are aggressive and not too wary, making them easier to hook than some other snappers. Use small hooks with cut bait, shrimp, or squid. They're most active at night, but we catch plenty during daytime trips too. Spring through fall is prime time, with spawning peaks from March to September. Lanes put up a decent fight for their size and make excellent eating. The meat is mild and flaky - great for frying up fresh. Here's a local tip: if you're catching a bunch of small ones, try moving to slightly deeper water for bigger fish.

Mutton Snapper are a prized catch here in the Florida Keys. These beautiful pink fish average 10-20 inches but can reach up to 3 feet. You'll find them around reefs, inlets, and mangroves, usually in 80-300 foot depths. They're most active at night but we catch them during the day too. Muttons put up a solid fight and taste great, making them popular with our guests. Use fresh bait like squid or small fish. Here's a pro tip: let your bait drift in the chum slick with minimal weight. When you see that flash of pink coming up, get ready! Muttons will try to run back to structure, so be quick on the reel. Spring and early summer are prime seasons as they gather to spawn. The meat is excellent - firm, white, and mild. Perfect for the grill or as ceviche back at the dock.
